Rejuvenation (Rasāyana)
When the body is depleted by stress, age, or illness, we shift from clearing to building.
Rasāyana is the science of replenishment.
What to Expect: This path is nourishing and grounding. While it does not require the intensive purgation of Śodhana, it frequently utilizes Basti (medicated oil enemas) to pacify Vāta at its root. This is not about "cleaning out," but about "soaking in"—hydrating the tissues and resetting the nervous system through localized and internal oil therapies.
A Day of Deep Rejuvenation: The Rasāyana Experience
A day in a rejuvenation intensive is a choreography of nourishment. Unlike the active "pulling" of purification, these sessions are about receiving. The goal is to saturate the physiology with lipid-mediated herbal wisdom to settle the mind and reset the nervous system.
1. Abhyanga | Sacred Oil Saturation
The day begins with a rhythmic, full-body warm oil massage. Using medicated oils tailored to your current state, Abhyanga serves as the primary vehicle for nourishment. It moves the lymph, softens the skin, and creates a protective "sheath" around the nervous system.
2. Svedana | Herbalized Steam
Following the oil application, you are transitioned into a localized or full-body herbal steam. This gentle heat opens the Srotas (channels), allowing the medicinal qualities of the oils to penetrate the deeper Dhātus (tissues). It liquefies any lingering surface tension and prepares the body for total stillness.
3. Śirodhara | The Crown Jewel
This is the heart of the "nervous system reset." A continuous, warm stream of medicated oil is poured over the Ājñā Cakra (third eye/forehead). Śirodhara induces a profound state of "alpha wave" relaxation—an altered state of consciousness where the brain can finally let go of the "fight or flight" response. It is unparalleled for resolving insomnia, anxiety, and mental fatigue.
4. Basti | Grounding the Roots
In a rejuvenation context, we utilize Anuvāsana Basti (nutritive oil enema). This is the most effective way to pacify Vāta Doṣa at its primary seat.
-
Clinical Purpose: This is a "retention" therapy, meaning the oil stays in the body to hydrate the colon and ground your energy.
-
The Palliative Path: If you are participating in a 3-5 day intensive, this may be done in-office. For those on a palliative track, I provide a guided at-home Basti protocol, allowing you to maintain this crucial grounding frequency between sessions.
